I was talking to a New Holland dealer today regarding the Boomer series tractors vs. the JD 4000 series. He stated that JD recommends using a transmission heater before starting the tractor in cold weather (32 degrees?). Does anyone know if that's true? This salesman claimed it has something to do with hydro tractors and JD designing them so the tranny is turning when the starter turns the engine. The tranny heater is supposed to make starting easier because the trans oil is warmed.Has anyone else heard this? Is a JD 4000 series tractor hard to start in cold weather?I'm planning to use this tractor for moving snow. It has to start in any weather.Thanks-

The hydro pump does turn while cranking the engine. This is true on any hydrostatic tractor. I have owened 4-5 in my lifetime and have never heard of this. I currantly have a JD 755 that will start in any weather as long as the battery is in good condition. I think the dealer is just trying to sell you a gear type tractor. Personally unless I was doing logging or some other heavy duty operation, I wouldn't oun anything except a hydro... Try one mowing etc, and you will see what I mean. E-Mail me if you need any info. Block and transmission heaters are available for 4000 series tractors. I have a 4100 with neither heater and had no trouble starting it all winter with temperatures as low as 10 degrees F below zero. It kicked right off every time. (You are supposed to turn the key to the intermediate position for at least three seconds before starting to let the glow plugs have an effect.) In colder conditions, the heaters might be required. ....

Exactly my question. I am waiting for my 4300 to come in [maybe this week] and stopped by to have them put a heater in when it comes. They asked if I was going to keep it in a shed. If so, they told me to save my money, that it will start just fine.This is the same dealer who suggested that I go to the farm store for my scraper as it would be a lot cheaper for what I wanted to use it for.Doug ....

I am going to guess that it depends on the particular model. My JD 4100 has started without a problem in many single digit winter days here in New England.A few 10-15 degrees BELOW were not a problem.My neighbor has a JD 955 and DID have problems ! Installing the heater did the trick for him and he has not had a problem since. ....

The question was about transmission heaters and everyone seems to be answering an engine starting question. Hydros need to have warm oil in them before you use them. During cold weather the warm up time needed to bring the hydro oil up to temperature can be quite long. Much longer than what is required to warm up the engine. Some people may not warm up the transmission long enough and could cause damage. I am not familiar with your model, but with most models as long as you do not drive off to soon, the heater is not necessary. ....

My 4300 started EVERY time this winter, never had to plug in the heater. Also starts very quickly in any temp, which is something my Boomer 1530 never did. ....
